Video #1 The Fundraising Goals:
Video #2 - Where to buy a Golden Heart Hand Statue
Hello, Class of ’74!
We are sharing updates for the Class of 1974 Deaf Leadership Fund campaign.
New Deadline: The deadline to make donations or pledges is December 31, 2024.
Fundraising Goals:
- Achieve a 100% participation rate among the 90 members of the Class of 1974 who attended the 50th class reunion. As of November 1, participation is at 33%.
- Raise a total of $74,000 for the fund by December 31, 2024. As of November 1, the fund balance is $60,912.68.
You have several options for contributing to the fund: make a one-time gift, set up recurring payments, and/or make a pledge.
How to Make a Pledge:
You can pledge any amount, and your pledge will count toward the total campaign goal. For example, if you pledge $1,000, this amount will contribute to the fund’s total by December 31, 2024. You then have until December 31, 2025, to complete the full payment of your pledge.
If you would like to make a pledge, please contact Rebecca Rydstrom at rebecca.rydstrom@gallaudet.edu to receive a pledge form.
Thank you for supporting the Class of 1974 Deaf Leadership Fund!
Hello! Many of you have inquired about the Golden Heart Hand Statue, which served as a stunning centerpiece on each table at the banquet. I purchased it online for $25.99 plus tax, and it comes with free shipping! My wife, Meg, and I absolutely love it!

Jim Bishop
Our goal is to achieve 100% participation from members of our class of 1974 by personally giving gifts.
To reach this goal, we kindly ask that you confirm your participation by November 3, 2024, by midnight. Your involvement means a lot to us!
URGENT!
Good day! We had a fantastic time at last week's Golden Anniversary Class reunion. A big thank you to Melinda, Scott, and their team for their hard work. Kudos to Linda and June for their exceptional fundraising efforts for the Class of '74 Endowment Fund.
We proudly awarded our first-ever scholarship to Amanda Hardin during the GUAA brunch. It was a memorable moment.
We aim to boost donor participation in the Class of '74 Fund to nearly 100% participation by midnight Sunday, November 3rd. Several fund matchers are challenging each of us to contribute any amount, offering to match our donations with their individual maximums—some as high as $500, $1,000, $2,000, and even one up to $20,000! So, our top goals are:
- Goal number 1: To ensure a high level of participation from classmates, we are implementing an online donation. The dedicated link will lead you directly to the Class of 1974 Deaf Leadership Endowment at the gu.live/Classof1974
- Goal number 2: To achieve an endowment fund of over $74,000.
- Goal number 3: Pam Holmes and her team will match the total donation amount.
This approach will maintain confidentiality, allowing us to keep donors' identities private. The Office of Institutional Advancement will not show individual names but will provide us with the total fund amount and participation percentage.
It's not too late to encourage others to join our efforts. Please act now!
Thank you! In solidarity with Golden Hearts,
Jim Bishop, Class of 1974 President

To those who are attending at Gallaudet for our 50th reunion, here are more Frequent Asked Questions
1. I am flying in; how do I get transportation to and from Gallaudet?
There are several options to get to and from Gallaudet. You can take the Metro (subway) using the red line to NoMa - Gallaudet U Metro stop. NoMa stands for North of Massachusetts Ave.
From Reagan National Airport: Get on the Blue or Yellow line to the Metro Station. At the Metro Station, transfer to the Red line which ends at Glenmont. Remember to get off at NoMa - Gallaudet University which is a short walk of 3,504 feet.
From Dulles National Airport: Get on the Silver Line. It’s about a 30–40 minute ride to the Metro Station. From Metro Station, get on the Red Line going towards Glenmont. Get off at NoMo Station and walk to Gallaudet University.
From Baltimore-Washington Airport: Get on the bus to the Amtrak Station nearby. The Amtrak will take you to Union Station. Upon arrival, walk to the rear end of Union Station where you can catch a Gallaudet shuttle bus to the campus. Check their schedule on Gallaudet’s website.
While more expensive, but faster, taxi, Lyft and Uber services are always an option. Use their app on your mobile device.
2. Where can I meet my classmates during my downtime?
The Kellogg Conference Center Hotel offers two bar locations to order drinks, sit down and chat with friends. They are located on the front patio near the building entrance and on the 2nd floor. Feel free to spend your down time there!
3. When is the official kick-off of our 50th Anniversary Reunion?
Our official kick-off is on Wednesday, October 16th at 7 PM on the 2nd floor of the Student Cafeteria. There will be a Wine and Cheese event. Bring your energy as we will be playing some fun games! Volunteers driving golf carts will be available to transport you to and from the event.
4. What can I do on Thursday, October 17th which is A Free Night?
After the Alumni Emeriti Ceremony Reception on Thursday, the evening is yours to plan. Feel free to meet up with family members or friends and dine off campus, to attend your respective Greek conclave or the Alumni Bison Tank.
Here below are some possible places to dine off-campus. These places are basically within walking distance. The vicinity of Union Market is an upscale area now and is generally safe. H Street has blossomed with restaurants and bars: however, it is still recommended that you not walk alone. It’s best to be in a group. Note: Read their business websites below:
A. The Union Market building (Right out the 6th Street Gate)
1309 Fifth St. NE
Market hours: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
The modernized Union Market building is home to 34 full-time food and drink vendors and a handful of pop-ups. Wander through the space, which is located next to the historic awnings of its early-20th-century predecessor, and you’ll be met with abundant scents, shops and spots to eat.
1) La Cosecha (Behind Union Market building)
1280 Fourth St. NE.
Market hours: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
While the Union Market building draws in vendors of global cuisine, La Cosecha exclusively hosts those from Latin America. The spacious brick building behind Union Market is home to 15 restaurants, bars and shops with their roots in cultures from across Central and South America.
2) Sweetgreen (next to La Cosecha)
1304 Fourth St. NE
Market hours: 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily
Home to craveable bowls, satisfying salads and plentiful plates, straight from the farm.
B. In the neighborhood of Union Market and La Cosecha
Though there are enough restaurants in Union Market and La Cosecha to last you a lifetime, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wander onto the neighboring streets to try the range of full-service dining there. The spots surrounding the two markets provide varying levels of fine dining in a wide swath of cultural flavors.

Hello Gallaudet ‘74ers,
Hope you are enjoying your summer. We hope you have received your recent email message regarding the YouTube video about “1974 Champs’’. Hope you are inspired by this video.
Now it’s less than three months before our 50th Golden anniversary reunion at Gallaudet. Many have already registered to attend. Currently we have about eighty-two 74ers plus about 35 guests. The numbers continue to grow. So if you plan to register, be sure to do this soon. September 1st is the final deadline. That’s 33 days from the date. Also if you need a roommate, contact GUAA and provide your request. As for making a hotel reservation, Kellogg is all booked, but there are three hotels with group rates that are close by, Hotel Nell-Union Market, Homewood Suites, and Marriott Courtyard.
Our hard-working Memory Book editor Donalda Ammons has been creating our book for the 74ers. She mentioned that we have a total of 123 profiles submitted. She has them all set and organized. Next, Donalda is asking that if any of you who has photos especially during our Junior year, send these to photos@gally74.org. She’s missing a group picture of us, Juniors in front of Chapel Hall. Do you have it? If so, please send them to photos@gally74.org. Also she needs many more pictures, ie: past reunions, activities and such. Look into your closets, boxes, and/or albums and send these. If you found your pictures, be sure to date the year they were taken. That would be very helpful. Thank you. Donalda wants to send her appreciation to those who have
helped her during this Memory Book process.
***Remember September 1st is the FINAL date to register. GUAA will NOT accept late comers.
See you at our 50th reunion at Gallaudet on October 16-20.

More FAQ re: Kellogg Hotel:
1. Can I add a 3rd or 4th roommate and still pay $142 (+ $21.68 tax + $12 facility fee = $175.68 per night)?
The $142 rate is based on double occupancy. There is an additional $50 per person for the third and fourth guests. For 3 in a room, the rate will be $192 per night. For 4 in a room, the rate will be $242 per night. DC fire codes do not allow more than 4 in a room. The names of all your roommates must be included in the hotel’s system when you check in.
2. Will the hotel charge to my credit card when I make my on-line reservation?
No, all hotel charges will be billed to your credit card when you check out.
3. Can I split my hotel bill with my roommates?
Roommates who wish to split the bill must arrange this at check-in time. You must have both credit card numbers in the hotel’s computer system file. Please don’t forget to do this during check-in.
4. Where do I find my hotel confirmation number?
If you entered your email address on the hotel reservation form, the hotel will send you a confirmation number. If you didn’t leave your email address on their form, then they have no way to send the confirmation number to you.
5. How do I add my roommate(s) name(s) to my reservation?
If your roommate’s name is not listed on your hotel reservation, please email the name(s) of your roommate(s) with your hotel confirmation number to Scott - scottpkramer@gmail.com or Melinda - melinda.padden@gmail.com. They will communicate this with the Alumni Relations Office.
6. Can I get a cheaper hotel rate through booking.com, hotels.com, etc.?
Reservations through these apps will not offer the same benefits as the Class of 1974 group rate. There are additional costs. You must pay the $50 per day for parking plus the $12 facility fee. The Class of 1974 group rate offers free daily parking during your stay.
As of Friday, May 17: Here is the list of our classmates who have already register. Spouses/Guests are not included in this list.

Gallaudet Class of 1974 Reunion News
October 29, 2023
We, the class of 1974 reunion committee hope that all is well with you. Our 1974 reunion is ONE year from today! The date will be determined shortly.
Recently from October 18-22 our co-chairs, Scott and Melinda and some committee members, Roman Kazragis, Anna Zuccaro, Hal Clapp, Brenda Pickering, Arlene Kushmider, and Vicki Lowen went to Gallaudet University’s Homecoming. They all stayed at Kellogg center and they volunteered to help the class of 1973’s Golden Anniversary reunion all weekend. We want to recognize our other classmates: Brian Brizendine, June McMahon and Colette Walker who also volunteered for Alumni Relations. Melinda and Scott’s team enjoyed themselves and they have a better insight on what to plan for our 50th Golden reunion at Gallaudet in October 2024. They already have some wonderful and exciting ideas stewing. It’s going to be fun for everyone.
Melinda Padden and Scott Kramer want to tell you all that this is a once in your lifetime opportunity to meet your old friends, enjoy the activities around the campus, and to receive the Gold Medallion from Gallaudet. They guarantee that you will have a wonderful time at Gallaudet.
There are many new changes and upgraded buildings in Washington DC. The city is becoming more user friendly for us such as Union Market, H Street, Trader Joe’s, REI and many more. Gallaudet also has beautified the campus with a new football field and other buildings.
We hope that you plan to come to Gallaudet in October 2024. This is your Golden opportunity to receive a gold medallion and to see your old friends.

Profile Form for Class of 1974
Hi Class of 1974- Know what? Time is getting closer for our 50th class reunion at Gallaudet next year in October 2024. So, we have a lot of good things coming up.
One of the things we must do is to create a memory book. I have accepted to be your editor and I am excited! Judy Pleskatcheck Mohan has graciously agreed to assist me for this endeavor.
Attached are two forms: Fill Out Form and Sample Form Copy. The first one is the blank one which you shall fill out and send back to me at memorybook@gally74.org. The second form is only a sample copy for you to see what and how to fill out. Send by January 15, 2024.
There is another thing that we need to decide- would you want to have a hard copy of the Memory Book or just get an electronic copy such as in PDF? Which would you prefer?
Donalda "Ducky"
